When the Fangs faded out from the publishing field last year, it opened up a whole new political vacuum that they left behind. When the Fang's Examiner or Willie Brown's newspaper for the Burton/Brown machine mysteriously went under as that machine did, it opened up a whole lot of opportunities politically for everyone.
The Fang Independent had kept San Francisco control of politics in a vise for a decade. They were instrumental in 3 mayors elections (Jordan, Brown and Newsom), a DA (Hallinan) and dozens of supervisors.
The Fangs were once called the "King Makers".
After our heroes on the board who actually are historic in helping bring down the machine, Ammiano, Peskin, Daly, Sandoval, McGoldrick and Matt Gonzales stood up to the Fangs and canceled their public notices in 2003 which was the lifeline of their Independent.
Months after the supes cut off this money, MA Fang was ready to sell...the Independent imploded!
Tony Hall could have been a hero too. He was at one time on our side anti-Brown and Fang but sometime in 2002 chose to sell out to Brown and the Fangs. He took a deal to help confirm a Fang/Brown crony Jeff (somebody) into the PUC that same year.
He was the original drafter for the proposition K the 2002 initiative to take away the public notices away from the Independent and hand it to McGoldrick telling him I am not doing it.
Tony Hall did a whole lot of damage to the progressive movement on the board.
He took office on the anti-Willie platform and ended up Brown-nosing with DA mayor. He lied to his constituents-he had no re-electible chance and Newsom saw that and wanted him to step down and take the Treasure Island gig so Newsom could appoint his guy on the board.
There were one-problem folks! Newsom could have had his veto protectors out there and it all depended on Jake McGoldrick's defeat. That why all of the marbles were spent to defeat McGoldrick and they lost. It was a big loss to the downtown pawn brokers.
So whats happening? They want to eliminate district elections. They want to rid the board of progressives, the ones that dont kiss up to the Gap, Wells Fargo you know the usual suspects that corrupt our city? Your SOS SF, Golden Gate Assoc. your committee On (Blow) Jobs, Wilie Brown's buddies Jack (ass) Davis and so on.
